We are ONE day away from the Peace Forum! Speakers started arriving today and the excitement is building! We are expecting a good size audience for this once in a lifetime event. It’s been a long time since this kind of forum has been held in the KC area (if ever) and we aim to make it a good one. Attached is a pdf version of the program for tomorrows event. Dr. Sharif Abdullah will be our first speaker on April 20th, his keynote begins at 8:45am. Dr. Abdullah is a graduate of Clark University and Boston University, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and an MA Juris Doctor. He is the founder of the Commonway Institute, an organization dedicated to create a world that works for all, by training 21st Century leaders in business, government and community organizations. Commonway conducts operations that build inclusivity, understanding and connection between diverse groups of people. His speech is entitled “Finding Our Way in the Land of the Blind – Steps for Living in a Violence Free World”.
Attached is a more detailed bio on Dr. Abdullah, he has written several books and won a Humanitarian Service Award in 2006 from the Unity and Diversity Council.
An excellent example of a peace event going on over seas. It’s pretty cool to see so many of these events going on all around the world. Our event here in April is small in comparison to some of the two and three day events going on, however the impact is still huge. With so many events going on in the next few months in Lee’s Summit (KCMO), Chicago, New York, London, Prague and New Delhi you wold think that it would make some news right? Unfortunately you have to look for it to find it. In a time when all the news will cover is negative events we need your help now more than ever to spread the word for peace! April 20th at Unity Village in Lee’s Summit MO. Join us and make a difference!
On April 20th at Unity Village the Peace Forum will now feature an additional event for girl scouts in Lee’s Summit to come view a showing of “Odd Girl Out”. This video is rated PG-13 and is intended for Junior Girl Scouts and above. Oh yeah, it’s FREE for them to attend with a parent! This will not register you for the full peace forum, only the video.
J. Frederick Arment lives with his family and friends in Yellow Springs, Ohio. After an early career as a teacher, Arment founded a successful writing and marketing firm and began lecturing at Wilberforce College and Wright State University. His novels include the philosophical orphan’s tale, “Backbeat: A Novel of Physics,” and a political thriller, “The Synthesis.” His nonfiction work, “The Elements of Peace: How Nonviolence Works,” was released in 2012.
Arment’s strategic marketing business, The Arment Group, is a full-service marketing and communications firm located in Dayton, Ohio. Clients include Fortune 500 firms as well as regional and local profit and not-for-profit organizations.
In his not-for-profit work, Arment works in Ohio and around the world with organizations that foster a positive approach to community revitalization. He is one of the founders and served as the first director of the Dayton International Peace Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to nonviolent alternatives to community and worldwide conflict. He now serves as the founding executive director of International Cities of Peace, a member association of cities of peace dedicated to encouraging safety, prosperity, and quality of life as consensus values for families, neighborhoods, and nations.
Arment has also served as a first reader for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and on the steering committee for the Salem Avenue Peace Corridor vitalization initiative. He is an advisor for the Unitarian Fellowship of World Peace and their art gallery, the Missing Peace Art Space, which will be hosting theAthensArt International Art Festival, 2014. Recently, Arment was tapped to provide strategic positioning consultation for the Honolulu-based international Center for Global Nonkilling.
After earning a bachelor of science degree in history education at Wright State University, Arment received a master’s in humanities with a focus on the eighteenth-century American and French Enlightenment period. His post-graduate study and publications have focused on the integrated disciplines of philosophy, peace, physics, and community redevelopment.

So who are our speakers for the peace forum? The first one we are going to highlight is Russ Vandenbrouke. Russ is the Director of the Peace, Justice and Conflict Transformation program at the University of Louisville Kentucky. Russ is a former Peace Fellow from the Rotary Peace Centers. Rotary Peace Fellows are leaders promoting national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict throughout their lives, in their careers, and through service activities. Fellows earn a master’s degree in international relations, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict studies. We are looking forward to hearing his talk.
